Tarrytown is a beautiful and historic neighborhood nestled along the Colorado River, a short distance northwest of Downtown Austin. The entire community was originally part of the sprawling 365-acre Woodlawn estate before being subdivided in 1915. The Woodlawn estate’s original 1850s Pease Mansion is the crown jewel of the West Austin Historic District. Other historic properties in the neighborhood include the riverside Italianate villa Laguna Gloria, which now houses a contemporary art museum. 
 
Tarrytown’s eclectic real estate mix encompasses grand historic estates, charming 1920s cottages, and masterpiece contemporary constructions. The neighborhood offers a wealth of recreation, including Austin’s oldest public golf course, the spring-fed Deep Eddy Pool, the sprawling green space of Red Bud Isle and Mayfield Park, and the kayak stand-up paddleboarding hotspot Walsh Boat Landing.

Dining, Entertainment & Shopping

Perched along the scenic shoreline of Lake Austin on the Colorado River, Hula Hut fuses Tex-Mex and Polynesian cuisine beneath a thatched-roof pier. Diners in this vibrant spot enjoy delicious specialties such as Mexonesian shrimp flautas, Kawaikini stuffed avocado, tacos, and quesadillas alongside tropical cocktails. The adjacent Mozart’s Coffee Roasters offers delightful coffee made from beans flame-roasted on site. Other menu favorites at Mozart’s include hot chocolate bombs and scrumptious baked goods. This lively café also boasts an outdoor patio overlooking Lake Austin, plus frequent live music performances. 
 
Away from the waterfront, Tarrytown Pharmacy has been a neighborhood institution since 1941. The Beer Plant is a more recent arrival offering elevated vegan gastropub cuisine alongside 40 varieties of craft beer on draft. Other Tarrytown businesses include the grocery stores Randalls and the 100% vegan Rabbit Food Grocery.

Things to Do

Deep Eddy Pool is a famous man-made swimming hole on the Colorado River fed by natural springs. The pool has been an Austin landmark since it was constructed in the 1930s. Deep Eddy Pool features a year-round lap pool and a wading pool that opens from March through October. During the summer, inflatable screens are erected at Deep Eddy Pool for outdoor movie screenings.
 
Walsh Boat Landing provides easy access to recreation on Lake Austin and the Colorado River with a concrete boat landing and businesses offering kayak and stand-up paddleboard rentals. Red Bud Isle spans 17 acres in the center of Lake Austin, and the entire space is open to off-leash dogs. 21-acre Mayfield Park features a historic cottage with two acres of colorful gardens surrounded by a wildlife habitat. Mayfield Park’s most famous residents are the beautiful peacocks that wander between the palm trees and water lilies of the cottage gardens. 
 
Lions Municipal Golf Course opened in Tarrytown in 1924. Popularly known as the Muny, the course has been heavily praised by golfing legends such as Ben Hogan and Ben Crenshaw. The beautiful Laguna Gloria villa houses art exhibitions from the Contemporary Austin. This stunning Italianate villa is surrounded by gorgeous gardens and landscaped grounds on Lake Austin’s shores.
